James Omara, 23, a computer science student at Kampala International University (KIU) was arrested last Thursday by the Parliamentary Police for allegedly sending a Valentine’s Day Message to Omoro district Woman Member of Parliament, Catherine Lamwaka.
His arrest has come following the MP’s complaint over offensive communication, by the KIU student. Omara, who is currently in his third year was arraigned before Buganda Road Court yesterday and charged with offensive communication. The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges and was remanded to Luzira Prison until April 17.
“Happy Valentines My MP” one of the three messages quoted by the MP reads. “Why are you so desperate to talk to me now, continue driving” the so in love Omara added.
However, MP Lamwaka has denied that the messages sent by Omara were love messages. The MP smartly described it as offensive communication when approached by journalists regarding the matter.
“He (Omara) did not send me a love message, do you know offensive communication? Does offensive communication mean a love message?” she angrily told one of the reporters.
“It was offensive communication but it wasn’t a love message,” the married MP added.
Omara becomes the second student to be jailed over similar charges as it should be recalled that YMCA’s Brian Isiko, 25, a student of Business Studies, was also arrested and later taken to court for sending love messages to Kabarole Woman Member of Parliament Sylvia Rwabwogo.
