Inner excitement was felt by Kyambogo University students following an emergency meeting that was held between the administration and guild leaders on Friday. The University was planning to implement a 12-week tuition policy where students who fail pay within the first 12 weeks of the semester would be forced to take a dead year.
This policy forced the Banda-based students to stage a bloody strike last Thursday which left a lot of property destroyed and six students arrested.
During the meeting, the students’ leaders and management agreed to let students continue paying
All students will be required to produce examination permits before being allowed to sit for end of semester exams, which are commencing in two weeks.
The newly elected Guild President, Jonathan Tundulu has revealed that students are willing to hold an open engagement with the administration if it involves relaxing or totally removing the policy citing poor backgrounds of most Kyambogo students. Tundulu is still not sure whether those involved in destroying property were indeed Kyambogo students.
Prof Fabian Nabugomu, the Kyambogo University Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration has insisted that the fees policy has been in operation since 2013, and no student will be allowed to sit for exams minus clearing 100%.
“I would like to appeal to students, sponsors, guardians and parents that they should find fees because these are privately sponsored students and should be paid up according to the policy that they were given when they joined university so that we are able to teach, assess them and be able to run activities of the University,” Prof. Nabugomu said.
