Meya Avice Kakayi who is attached Silverfin Swimming Academy last month captained the national swimming team at the 17th FINA (Fédération Internationale De Natation) world swimming championships that ran from July 23-30 in Budapest, Hungary.
Meya, 22 who happens to be a student from Kyambogo university awaiting her graduation with a bachelors degree in development studies shone at the event that took place two weeks ago.
In the women’s 50m freestyle swimming session, Meya happened to secure the 3rd position in the heat 2 with a duration of 29.88s after Hanta Valisoa from the republic of Moldova with 28.84s and Nicaragua’s Gabriella Hernandez with 28.07s .Additionally, Meya managed to attain the 70th position according to overall total heat rankings setting the very first and a new record for our country Uganda.
After the notable success she took to her social media to post.
“It was a great experience that I attained at the Budapest 2017 – FINA World Championships. It was amazing to break one of my very own Nation’s records but most of all, achieve personal best times; not only me but my fellow team mates Joshua Tibatemwa and Isma Serunjogi. I am grateful to coach Rosa Rodriguez for the training and supervising support and encouragement given and The Uganda Swimming Federation for the great opportunity but most of all the glory and honor goes back to God for being with me every step of the way.#FINABudapest2017.#Swimming.”
In an exclusive interview with Campus Bee six months ago, Meya disclosed to us some of the other milestones she has achieved including her first medal and prize in the 25m freestyle swimming competition as a primary kid.
“I was Uganda’s National Swim Team Captain 2015 and 2016.
I Represented Uganda in the CANA ZONE 3 championships in Mauritius 2016 and made personal best times in 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle. I won 14 gold medals in Kenya when I Represented KYU in the 10th East African University Games 2016. I won 8 gold and 5 silver medals when I became Best female swimmer in 15 and above category in the 2nd annual club gala 2016.”
