During a press briefing held on Monday 31st May 2021, Kyambogo University Vice-Chancellor Prof Eli Katugunka revealed that 50 new COVID-19 cases have been registered at the university and they are all students. The number of cases has now shoot up as it should be recalled that 8 students tested positive last week, forcing Katungunga to cancel physical lectures.
Katunguka further disclosed that those who tested positive have refused to isolate themselves in their hostel rooms and are insisting on reporting to campus. Despite the administration’s move to cancel physical lectures, students have continued to show up on campus following last week’s strike against online lectures.
Katunguka also revealed that he was warned by the Director of Kyambogo Medical Center that the figure is likely to go up if physical contact between students and lecturers is not minimized.
The Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor suggested that the government should reopen Namboole stadium so that students who test positive are isolated there since the university does not have isolation facilities at the moment.
