While addressing the media over the weekend, the Kyambogo University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elly Katunguka revealed that the university management has finalized with plans of deducting medical insurance fees from its staff’s salary come the year of 2019.
According to Katunguka, the University Council has passed a staff medical Insurance scheme policy, aimed at catering to staff health demands.
“An ad-hoc committee was selected to enrol staff for the scheme and a sensitisation exercise to create awareness among all staff members was done. The process of procuring the service providers is ongoing to select insurance companies to offer best services,” Prof Katunguka said.
Katunguka added that the scheme will benefit over 940 Kyambogo University employees, their spouses, and utmost four children who must be under the age of 21 years.
Apparently, the entire scheme will cost the university UGX 1 Billion but all staff members will be required to contribute 2% of their monthly salary to meet the expenditures.
“One of the major challenges our staff has been grappling with is the high cost of medication. We believe that with this new initiative, which is the first of its kind, our staff will get subsidized medication,” Katunguka added
Katunguka also noted that the management is looking for ways of handling polygamous men who are still not sure on how to ensure the health demands of all their wives as well as children.
