The wait is over for hundreds of students hoping for a government-funded shot at university. The Ministry of Education and Sports, through the Joint Admissions Board (JAB), has released the recommended list of students admitted under the District Quota Government Sponsorship Scheme for the 2026–2027 academic year, with over 800 candidates selected for placement in public universities across Uganda.

There’s one important catch: the recommendations remain subject to verification by the respective district authorities before the admissions are formally confirmed.

What the District Quota Scheme Is About

The District Quota Scheme exists to promote equitable access to higher education, ensuring that every district in Uganda gets an opportunity to benefit from government-sponsored university education. The policy is designed to spread opportunity beyond the traditionally advantaged regions and give students from across the country a fair chance.

Districts With the Most Slots

This year’s list shows that some districts secured significantly more government-sponsored slots than others. Leading the pack are:

  • Mukono – 14 students
  • Jinja – 12 students
  • Buikwe – 11 students
  • Mayuge – 10 students
  • Mbale – 10 students

Other districts with notable allocations include Arua (9), Bugiri (9), Kasese (9), Masaka (9), Kamuli (8), Lira (8), Bushenyi (7), Hoima (7), Iganga (7), Kabale (7), Kabarole (7), Kamwenge (7), Kayunga (7), and Mbarara (6).

The list covers all regions of Uganda, with allocations distributed according to the District Quota policy.

The Most Popular Programmes

Health sciences, education, and business courses dominated this year’s government sponsorship list.

Among the programmes attracting the highest numbers of students are Bachelor of Arts with Education, Bachelor of Science with Education (Biological), Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Nursing Science, Bachelor of Human Resource Management, Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology, and Bachelor of Science with Education (Physical).

Other sought-after courses include Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of International Business, Bachelor of Business Computing, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Journalism and Communication, Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Optometry, Bachelor of Computer Science, and Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences.

Which Universities Are Involved

The recommendations cover admissions to Uganda’s public universities, including Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Gulu University, Busitema University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kabale University, Lira University, Muni University, Soroti University, Mountains of the Moon University, and Makerere University Business School.

What Happens Next

Before anyone celebrates too early, it’s worth repeating: recommended candidates will only be admitted after their respective district authorities complete the verification process required under the scheme. That step is crucial, and students should stay in close contact with their district authorities to ensure nothing stalls their placement.

In the meantime, students, parents, and guardians can now check the full District Quota admissions list to confirm the names of successful candidates, their districts, programmes of study, and the universities where they have been recommended for admission.

For thousands of families across Uganda, this list represents more than a placement — it’s a hard-earned doorway to higher education that might otherwise have stayed shut. If your name, or that of someone you know, is on it, the next move is simple: follow up with your district authorities and get verified.
