A group of UPDF army soldiers have been spotted camping near Makerere University’s Africa Hall, a female’s hall of residence inside the university premises as well as the adjacent Livingstone Hall for males.
Sources report that the army’s presence at these halls has yielded complaints from female students who want the sexual harassment committee to look into the matter.
Various theories have emerged among students following the UPDF deployment as some claim the soldiers are working to eliminate sexual harassment while others say it is a simple security measure.
According to the Police Commander in charge of the university security, Mr. Chris Kato, the deployed soldiers are working hand in hand with police to boost the security of the university following a number of insecurity cases around the city.
Kato added that the officers are not sleeping in the buildings but are instead using them as a command center to conduct both night and day time patrols around the campus. Kato confessed that he has not yet received any formal complaint that the soldiers are disturbing female students as he promised to investigate the matter.
Our snoops added that various soldiers are always moving around these halls and their clothes can be seen hanging outside the halls.
Speaking of the sexual harassment committee, it is set to meet Makerere students tomorrow, Saturday December 1st following last week’s cancelled appointment with the same group. In a letter dated November 27th from the clerk to Parliament, Ms Agatha Akankunda, to the university Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, they want to meet students tomorrow after missing last week’s chance as some students were doing exams.
