While speaking to journalists this afternoon, Makerere University students’ leaders addressed a number of issues including; the rumour that they have been motivated by politicians to disorganize the university.
The group was led by the Guild President Julius Kateregga who made it clear that what is happening at the Ivory Tower is not anyone’s war but rather for students against the unfair administration.
“We have made our demands and we are going to stick on them until they are met,” Kateregga swore before adding that “We want to make it clear that out fight is not motivated by anyone and we are not fighting anyone’s war, this is a students’ war.”
Kateregga also condemned the Vice Chancellors’ (Prof Barnabas Nawangwe) remarks that the girls who led the demonstration are eying for political positions come next year, a statement he thinks was regrettable.
The leaders went ahead to clarify more about the conditions they have set for the administration, whose ignorance will not yield any dialogue as requested by the management. According to Kateregga, the two university staff, Murangira Gordon the Personal Assistant to the vice chancellor and Prof Erias Hisaali should not be involved in the dialogue because they are terrorists.
The bitter People Power students’ leader further explained the two officials reportedly ordered police not to release their colleagues who participated in the demonstration even after 48 hours. Kateregga says that Police officers executed orders engineered by the two officials.
“These two are the ones behind the acts of terror that students were taken through on Wednesday night at Lumumba hall. Since America says they cannot negotiate with terrorists, we too fear terrorists and we cannot be in the same place with terrorists.” Kateregga vowed.
Also speaking at the presser was Ezra Byakutangaza, the Makerere guild speaker who revealed that they want the university council to trim the Vice Chancellor’s powers of suspending students the way he wants.
