Dr Ronald Luwangula, a senior lecturer at Makerere University’s School of Social Sciences in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration is currently nursing wounds after he was allegedly beaten by military police.
According to Luwangula who is getting medical treatment at Mengo Hospital, the incident happened on Thursday night after he had just finished conducting a lecture. Luwangula further explains that he moved towards his office at the School of Social Sciences and after about 10 meters, he was ambushed by three military police soldiers who beat him to coma using batons.
Luwangula was a victim of military police’s beating as they were disbanding students from the violent final guild rally, held at Freedom Square.
“As I left class, I was heading to my office to pack my things and get home. So just in between the lecture theatre or the venue where I taught from called the Central Teaching Facility 1, I met soldiers (military police),” Dr Luwangula narrates.
He adds that he had no idea that the officers were trying to calm down the situation that had turned violent. “I didn’t know that at the time, they were disbanding students who were from a rally which had been held at the freedom square.” Luwangula adds.
Luwangula says that he lost consciousness after being thoroughly thumped. He further narrates that as he moved down the stairs bleeding, he was assisted by his students and security guards attached to Senaca Security group.
It should be noted that there were several students who sustained serious injuries on Thursday night, some of which did not recognize who beat them up.
