While delivering their drafted report regarding the rampant rise of sexual harassment at Makerere University, the 5 member Committee chaired by Prof. Sylvia Tamale held a meeting today to present a draft report to various stakeholders for validation at the University’s Main Hall.
The committee has today recommended that the Makerere University’s policy should allow the filing of anonymous complaints so that more victims/eyewitnesses can report this rampant habit freely. It should be noted the current policy does not give room for anonymous complaints, something that has made it hard for people to report.
According to this report, a penalty should be imposed on people who are informed (aware) about sex for marks cases but they choose to take no action. Prof. Sylvia Tamale later trashed the idea that poor dressing is the main cause of sexual harassment at Makerere and she dismissed the idea of students having a similar dress code in the university premises.
The committee was instituted by the university vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe following various incidents of sexual harassment (sex for marks) at the Wandegeya-based University.
