The Makerere University multi-sports in-door Arena is almost complete, according to Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
The construction work which started in 2018 in order to host the 3rd FISU World University Netball tournament, had a backflip as the UPDF engineering brigade paused the construction work due to an emergency that they had to attend to in Northern Uganda.
The tournament however found the arena not yet complete. Large banners were put up to hide the unfinished parts.
Construction work however resumed soon after the World University Netball World Cup and sources reveal that the big arena is almost complete.
The arena which saw the Ministry of Education advance 5.6 billion to the Makerere University resources was supposed to seat 1,500 people. This however changed after the tournament as the arena was redesigned to increase capacity to 2,500 people.
It is bad news however for their counterparts at Kyambogo University.
The Kyambogo University main football ground is still stuck with gravel and trenches that were dug in December as the university prepared the grounds for a graduation ceremony that was graced by President Museveni.
The memorable graduation ceremony saw the university host the first PhD Graduands but since then, the university grounds were abandoned. The university team is left with one football ground in the west end which is substandard according to students.
With the resuming of the Pepsi Uganda University League, the players have no choice but to use the second choice football grounds.
Sources revealed to our hive that at the start of this semester, the university authorities revealed to students leaders that there were plans of building a mega standard stadium at the site. The authorities revealed how the main grounds would not be used for the whole semester as plans for construction were underway.
Sports at Uganda’s second biggest university has not yet approached a desirable level. The university has no official netball or rugby grounds. The university teams from the said camps have been sharing the main football grounds with the football team which leaves them now with no ground to train from.
