According to some of the staff members, they highly doubt the independence of the three-member committee set up set up by the Vice Chancellor Prof Nawangwe, who happens to be the same official that suspended Kamunyu.
Among these include, Associate Prof. Ronald Kakungulu-Mayambala, a law lecturer at Makerere Law School and the MUASA Legal Officer, who says that they can’t trust the independence and fairness of a committee set by the person who has suspended their colleagues.
While speaking to journalists at Makerere Senior Staff Club, the MUASA Vice Chairperson Associate Prof. Edward Mwavu revealed that despite Kamunyu’s interest to appear before the committee, he has to yet received summons from the three member committee.
Mwavu adds that the current strike is an internal matter that the management can resolve only if they decided to ignore their egos. He also revealed that they will continue engaging the Makerere management until their issues are resolved.
It should be recalled that Dr Kamunyu was suspended by the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe over indiscipline and inciting violence among Makerere University staff members. His suspension forced other staff members to lay down their tools in protest of the suspended MUASA leader and other officials.
