Joseph Opio, a popular comedian, screenwriter and alumnus of Makerere University has been nominated in the popular Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series.
Opio, alongside his counterpart David Kibuuka; who is also a Ugandan by Nationality, found their way to these awards through their active role as screenwriters for the Daily Show hosted by award-winning Trevor Noah.
Our snoops have reliably established that Opio graduated with a Bachelor’s of Law at Makerere University right before he landed a job with a major audit firm in Kampala.
But the life of stuffy suits did not sound appealing to him and had been drawn to comedy in his early teens.
Opio then kickstarted a career in comedy, hosting a show dubbed LOL Uganda on Urban TV which he as well wrote, edited, directed and produced. With time, he luckily met Trever Noah who after numerous engagements and conversations, hired Opio as one of the writers for the Daily Show.
Emmy Awards, or simply Emmys, are American awards that recognize excellence in the television industry and is slated to take place on September 21, 2020 at The Microsoft Theater and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
We wish one of our own, the very best.
