Makerere University’s freshers ball on Saturday night drew a crowd of well over 10,000 students, but by Sunday morning most of the conversation online was about a single moment.
As the party peaked, a young woman climbed onto a table and began to undress in full view of the crowd. Clips filmed on phones spread quickly across social media, with many students describing the night as one of the wildest freshers events in recent memory.
Reaction online was split. Some treated the moment as part of an over-the-top night of celebration. Others were uncomfortable with how quickly the clips were shared, pointing out that a young person’s worst moment at a party can follow them for years once it is online. Some asked whether anyone checked on her during or after the incident.
Freshers balls are among the biggest nights on the campus social calendar, welcoming first-year students, many of whom are attending their first major university party. Questions about alcohol, crowd control and student welfare at these events come up almost every year.
