The 11th of September 2015 is a day that will forever be marked in the minds of many a people in Makerere. Freshers were graced with four different welcoming parties distributed around the university, each with a totally contradictory focus from the other.
The parties mostly dominated by continuing students included; a fresher’s ball at Guild canteen sponsored by Radio City. The turn up at this event clearly showed that free things will always be embraced in our dear country even when history has proven they always turned out expensive. The event turned “cosy” when unheard of artists that seem to have been discovered that night filled the stage even though redeeming names like Mun G, Santana and one hit wonder Big Trill showed up to save the day.
As the Byayanga star hit the crowd with “Ly’amaehhh… onywerekokaziire”, Full gospel ministries in partnership with Spirit FM did not give a chance to the devil to steal a sheep from God’s presence as they also staged a fresher’s welcoming porridge night at the Lumbox (MaryStuart) grounds. Performances from upcoming gospel artists highlighted this event and yet many would argue that the Porridge eating made more sense. Continuing students who mostly came in at this time were accompanied by buckets and flasks to get their fill of porridge as cups were left for the amateur freshers who are yet to see how such an event saves many from supper-breakfast hunger.
Just when you think it is only Pentecostal churches that are keen on winning more souls to their doctrine, the Catholic church of St. Augustine Makerere could not put to test the excited hearts of their catholic fresherson test the moment they hear the balokole biddongo; so they hurriedly threw their fresher’s welcoming ball in the same night. This was conducted in a dinner like manner save for the dress code that was mostly free style. Food was in plenty which could explain the astounding turn up for this event. Noticeably though, when all the Judith Babirye songs were played to exhaustion, the likes of Oliver Ngoma and Afrigo band songs started playing as if their being respectably old somehow brought them closer to Godly music. It however wasn’t before long that decent Afrigo music turned into Jamaican German juice that proved that even the rosary readers understand what dwindling ones’ behind is all about.
Our reliable bee continued to Buzz to the Faculty of Education where yet another fresher’s bash was taking place at the same time. Hot dancehall music defined the place together with the famous Lumumba Hall culture songs that any rightful thinking man would call offensive. Porridge was also so available at the event and the scientific fact that; eating is essential for proper body functioning was demonstrated by these educationists as specks of porridge remains were barely left in the saucepans.
The four events left Makerere students in an all-round move from spot to spot which explains the now common muscle ailments among them.
