Incoming Makerere University freshers, take note: the window to secure a bed in the university’s halls of residence is short, specific, and not to be missed. In an official notice dated Monday, 29th June 2026, the Office of the Dean of Students has informed all admitted first-year students that they are now eligible to apply for accommodation for the 2026/2027 academic year.
There’s one important reality to keep in mind, though — accommodation is subject to availability, as the university has limited bed spaces.
How to Apply
Applications for accommodation will be made online through the ACMIS portal — the same portal from which students download their admission letters.
A crucial detail: students may only apply for accommodation in the hall(s) to which they have been attached. In other words, you can’t shop around for a hall of your choice outside your attachment.
Government Students Must Also Apply
In a point that often catches students off guard, the notice stresses that even those admitted to Government Resident Programmes are required to apply for accommodation. Placement on a resident programme does not automatically guarantee room allocation — so government students who assume a bed is waiting for them need to think again and submit an application like everyone else.
Mark These Dates
The accommodation application portal will be open from Monday, 6th July 2026, to Friday, 10th July 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
The Dean of Students has made clear that no applications will be accepted after the deadline. With only a five-day window, procrastination could mean missing out entirely.
The outcome of each application will be communicated through the ACMIS portal.

For thousands of fresh students arriving at Makerere, hall accommodation is about far more than a roof — it shapes the entire first-year experience, from study routines and friendships to safety and proximity to lectures.
