Chaired by Jackson Twijukye, the Makerere University Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed this year’s guild elections to 4th May. The university was set to hold guild elections on Friday 30th April but according to the latest communication, the electoral process is being repeated following a later from the university Dean of Students Winifred Kabumbuli that was guiding how the elections should be held.
According to EC, the electoral body will do a system trial and pilot study/display of registers today 29th April. It should be recalled that the University Council suggested that voters’ registers should be displayed for students both physically and electronically.
The Makerere electoral body will tomorrow verify certificates of academic standing received from aspiring guild presidents who have already secured their copies from the Dean of Students. Issuance of certificates of nomination as well as publishing of duly nominated guild presidential aspirants will be held on 1st May, according to EC.
Upon being declared as duly nominated candidates, aspiring guild presidents will hold presidential debates ahead of guild elections slated for 4th May. More details indicate that GRCs will be voted on the same day (4th May).
