As thousands of students look up to him for solutions to their problems, the Makerere University Guild President Julius Kateregga who is known for using People Power’s defiance means to send a message to the administration has now resorted to prayers after realizing that striking is not the way to go.
Kateregga, who has always posted about his plans to defy the university’s newly introduced guidelines in the upcoming guild elections is currently calling upon students to fast and pray throughout this entire week.
“It’s with this background that I beesech you to dedicate a week to pray and fast for the University, Nation and Region from Monday, 27th January, 2020 to Saturday, 1st February, 2020.” Kateregga’s Facebook post reads in part.
The spiritually motivated Kateregga has also suggested that Makerere University should adopt a praying and fasting culture for at least every second week of the semester. He has also called upon the entire Makerere community to work together in making sure that 2020 does not become the same year as the previous ones.
“The year 2020 may not be so different from the years 2005, 2010 and 2015 but with the hand of God, we can change the times. It’s from the good Lord God that we shall be granted wisdom and persistence to see us through the turbulent times for the better days ahead. I ask everyone in your different denominations to spare some time for fasting and prayer for our university, nation and the Future.” Kateregga wrote.
In his new year’s message to the fellow students, Kateregga vowed to continue demanding what he believes is right for them. Among the demands include electoral reforms, reinstating suspended students, scrapping off the 15% annual tuition increment among others. The same leader has surprisingly resorted to prayers as thousands of students look up to him for solutions.
