Makerere University has launched a review of security and event management at university-sanctioned social events after an incident at Saturday’s freshers ball drew widespread attention online.
In a statement dated Tuesday, November 3, Dean of Students Dr Winifred Kabumbuli said the woman at the centre of the incident is a former student of the university, not a current one.
The freshers ball was held on the university grounds on Saturday, October 31. Kabumbuli noted that it is traditionally open to the public and attracts alumni and other members of the public as well as students.
The university said it does not condone conduct that undermines the values and standards of behaviour expected of its community. It has started what it called an immediate and comprehensive review of security and event management protocols, to prevent a repeat.

Family asks public to stop sharing
The statement also noted an appeal from the woman’s family asking members of the public to stop sharing the video and pictures of what the university called “the unfortunate incident.”
CampusBee has not named the woman or published any images of her, and will not do so.
The university said it remains committed to a safe, inclusive and dignified environment for students, staff, visitors and other stakeholders.
