Makerere University Senate has completed the assessment and vetting of candidates who applied for vacant positions of College Principals and Deputy Principals, forwarding the successful names to the University Governing Council for the next stage of the selection process.
The Principal is the administrative and academic head of a college and oversees its teaching, research and other academic and administrative activities. Principals also serve on the University Senate, Makerere’s top academic decision-making body.
The latest process follows a job advert issued by Makerere University for the vacant positions, which attracted applications from several senior academics.
After assessing and voting on the candidates, Senate forwarded the following names to the Governing Council for consideration:
College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES)
Associate Professor Gorette Nabanoga has been recommended for the position of Principal.
For Deputy Principal, Senate recommended Professor Yazidhi Bamutaze.
College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS)
Professor Ireeta Tumps Winston has been recommended for Principal, while Dr Godwin Kakuba has been recommended for Deputy Principal.
College of Education and External Studies (CEES)
Two professors have been forwarded for consideration for the Principal position:
Professor Muwagga Mugagga Anthony
Professor Ronald Bisaso
The two candidates have been presented to Council, which will determine who takes the position.
For Deputy Principal, Senate forwarded:
Dr Nicholas Itaaga
Dr Joyce Bukirwa
College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security (COVAB)
Two professors have been cleared for consideration for the position of Principal:
Professor Clovince Kankya
Professor Frank Norbert Mwiine
Mwiine is a former holder of the position.
Dr Acai Okwee James has been recommended for Deputy Principal.
College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS)
Professor Engineer Bainomugisha has been forwarded to Council for consideration for the position of Principal.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS)
Professor Eddy Joshua Walakira has been forwarded for consideration for the position of Deputy Principal.
The Senate recommendations are not yet final appointments. The names have been forwarded to the Makerere University Governing Council, which will undertake the next stage of the process and make the final determination on the candidates for the respective positions.
The appointments will determine the leadership of several of Makerere’s colleges, which are central to the University’s teaching, research and academic activities.
