Makerere University has released a summary of staff promotions and new recruitments carried out between July 2025 and now, showing a total of 153 academic staff movements, combining both promotions within the academic ranks and fresh academic hires, as the university continues building out its workforce under its current Strategic Plan.

According to the university, its Appointments Board has, over the past year, collectively approved multiple appointments spanning academic leadership positions, fresh academic hires, and a wide range of administrative and support staff roles, including several senior academic leadership positions such as Deans and Heads of Department.

The university describes its approach as merit-based, aimed at filling critical staffing gaps while investing in both academic excellence and efficient service delivery. Makerere says it remains committed to building an environment that attracts, develops, and retains top talent, while also managing ongoing staffing challenges arising from retirements, resignations, and other specialised needs through targeted recruitment, contract appointments, post-retirement contracts for professors, and staff development programmes.

Total Promotions: 81

Of the 81 total promotions recorded in the period, 16 were non-academic staff promotions, while 65 were academic promotions, broken down as follows:

  • Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer: 16
  • Lecturer to Senior Lecturer: 16
  • Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor: 25
  • Associate Professor to Professor: 8

The university also brought on 240 new staff members in the same period, split between:

  • Academic hires: 88 (62 Assistant Lecturers and 26 Lecturers)
  • Non-academic hires: 152

Taken together, the 65 academic promotions and 88 new academic hires bring the total number of academic staff who either moved up the ranks or joined the university afresh to 153, a figure that points to significant movement within Makerere’s academic workforce over the past year, particularly at the Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor level, which recorded the highest number of promotions.

The broader numbers, 81 total promotions and 240 new hires, reflect the scale of staffing activity across both academic and non-academic functions as the university works to address gaps left by retirements and resignations while expanding its capacity to deliver on its strategic priorities.
