In a letter dated October 29th 2020 addressed to the Makeree University Secretary Yusuf Kiranda, the institution’s staff tribunal directed the university to reinstate sacked officials as well as those who had been suspended on payroll.
Campus Bee has now leant that the troubled university has written to the Ministry of Finance seeking UGX 1 billion supplementary budget to cover the financial implications that came following the staff tribunal’s decision.
According to Kiranda, the staff tribunal’s decisions bare financial implications and the institution needs up to UGX 1 billion to run smoothly.
While speaking about the said UGX 1 Billion supplementary budget to Makerere University, the Finance Ministry’s spokesperson Jim Mugunga disclosed that he is not aware of it but admitted that any government agency is free to apply for a supplementary budget provided they justify the move.
Makerere University has faced a lot of challenges recently ranging from the fire that gutted the Ivory Tower to the resignation of their Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof William Bazeyo. The institution has also lost several court cases to sacked employees who in turn asked for compensation in form of huge sums of money.
The university is currently teaching final year students who cannot contribute the required amount of money to cover all the costs incurred by the institution.
