Pastor Martin Ssempa has sought audience with president Yoweri Museveni over the defunct Makerere University Community Church.
Ssempa requested the president on Sunday to invite him so he can share about his church’s ‘state of suffering’ at Makerere University.
“I would like to ask you that you invite me so I can brief you on our current state of suffering at Makerere University. The university which is supposed to be a leader in practicing the constitutional freedom of worship is now the one championing oppressing the rights to freedom of worship by religious minority groups such as the born again,” Ssempa said in a post on X.
He continued to blame VC. Nawangwe of suffocating him and denying him his religious freedom.
“I wish to report to you (Museveni) that my church was closed down at Makerere University. Prof. Nawangwe does not seem to have the same understanding of religious freedom which you our president practices,” he added.
Pastor Ssempa said he has been providing spiritual formation and social services to the students of Makerere University for more than 25 years. However, his church, Makerere University Community Church, was forced to close its operations at Makerere post COVID-19 pandemic.
Pastor Ssempa recently dragged the university to the Equal Opportunities Commission over the closure of his church. The matter is still pending as the parties were advised to settle their scores mutually.
“We have tried to write every letter, sign petitions, meet them face to face, but they keep pushing us to go to the Anglican Church,” Ssempa noted.
Ssempa requested for audience with the president following the commissioning of pastor Kakande’s church. The president officiated the ceremony as chief guest.
