Makerere University has issued an official press statement confirming the death of Kabuye Kelvin Charles, a second-year Bachelor of Architecture student at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), and says the matter has been handed over to the Wandegeya Homicide Desk for investigation.
In a statement dated September 30, 2026, signed by the Office of the Dean of Students, the university said the body was discovered on the early morning of September 28, 2026, inside the fenced enclosure housing the MTN communications mast opposite the University Library.
According to the statement, university security promptly reported the discovery to Makerere Police Station. Police officers responded immediately and have since handed over the investigation to the Wandegeya Homicide Desk and Scene of Crime Officers.
The university said the cause of death is not yet known, but a post-mortem examination has been requested and investigations remain ongoing. It added that it is fully cooperating with the Uganda Police Force.
This account corrects some earlier details that had circulated about the location of discovery and clarifies that the case has been formally referred to a homicide desk, with the cause of death still undetermined pending post-mortem results.
“The University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the late Kabuye Kelvin. We share in this profound loss and pain,” the statement read.
Makerere said members of the university community affected by the incident are encouraged to seek assistance, noting that counselling and psychosocial support services are available to all students and staff through the University Counselling and Guidance Centre. The university reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its students and staff.
The university said it will provide further updates as official information becomes available from investigating authorities. Media inquiries were directed to the Public Relations Office, Makerere University.
