The Makerere University council has approved a 15% tuition increment beginning with the next academic year 2018/2019 which is expected to kick off this August. The council’s decision comes following a well analyzed report handed over by the Makerere University student leaders suggesting a 15% tuition increase for only new students.
Having received the guild report just a week ago, the University Vice-chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has officially confirmed the council’s stand via his social media platforms. “Council has approved a new Fees Structure for undergraduate students starting 2018/2019 Academic Year with an increase of 15%. This will enable Management to make major improvements in service delivery and infrastructure so that our students can have an experience of a top University that Makerere is.” Nawangwe posted.
The 7 member student leaders committee travelled across various universities around the region including the University of Nairobi, Uganda Christian University, Gulu University among others to benchmark how the said institutions have been managing tuition increment. It was after these visits that the committee drafted a report suggesting a lower tuition increment contrary to the 91% increase earlier suggested by the University Council.
The University Council Chairman Dr Charles Wana-Etyem had promised to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the matter. It is not yet clear whether the council will maintain the 91% increase for Masters.
