Makerere University has began the process of halting all illegal business operations within the university premises.
According to the resolution by the university council in its 156th meeting, all vending activities within Makerere are to be halted.
The University council agreed to have only contracted catering companies operate at designated places such as hall kitchens as well as the souvenir shop.
“Terminate all businesses at the university campus effect 1st July 2022 except for the companies contracted by the university to provide catering services to students within selected kitchens in the halls of residence and the souvenir shop under the Makerere University endowment fund,” part of the resolution reads.
The council further tasked the university management to review business operations at the university and revert to the council for any further necessary action.
This resolution that had to be implemented on July 1st 2022 has left a number of vendors cursing.
Martin, a vendor selling phone covers beside Makerere rugby grounds revealed to the Bee that the decision to kick them out of campus will negatively affect their businesses.
He says being within the university premises helps them get a reasonable number of customers as students approach them first to purchase goodies.
Though ‘illegal’ vending had to be halted on 1st July as per the decision by the university council, vendors are still carrying on with their business as usual.
Majority of the vendors are not in the know of the resolutions by the university council which will bring an end to their business.
