Makerere Law Society (MLS) went to the polls again at the weekend after a year and voted for their society leaders.
In a very dramatic election results’ tallying process that had a different candidate in the lead every minute, Kansiime Mukama Taremwa of second year emerged victor with 363 votes.
Taremwa, who was up against Jeffery Kaddu Suubi, polled a majority, however slight, to become the next president of arguably the most prestigious society in Makerere University.
In the other voting, Erica Ainomugisha was overwhelmingly voted Vice President and Edgar Emmanuel Mugarura was voted the society Speaker.
Coleman Ntungwerisho and Marion Kirabo were voted Treasurer and First Year Representative respectively. The rest of the positions have been unopposed.
In his acceptance and self-congratulatory message, Taremwa appreciated all that voted him and pledged cooperation and support to Kaddu in all situations.
“The MLS is an intricate project. It is a work of art whose magic stems from its ideological foundations and its wealth of knowledge. Our society is a place where we are blessed with diversities of attributes and whose ultimate objective is that we must stay at the summit of excellence in the pursuit of our dreams in legal education.”
Taremwa and his team shall take over from Jordan Tumwesigye’s team that among other things oversaw a classy finalists’ dinner at Serena last year, and has launched several ‘Rule of Law clubs’ all over the country – in conjunction with the Uganda Law Society (ULS).
When contacted about his win, Taremwa said he was extremely humbled.
“I think that this was the most historic election in law school. The people should (therefore) be expectant. We owe them responsive leadership.”
