Makerere University students will be exempted from paying extra charges on tuition owing to late registration.
Through a letter to the 88th Guild President H.E. Lawrence Alionzi, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe confirmed the waiver on the surcharges.
“This is to confirm that your request to waive the surcharge due to late registration owing to the prevailing economic hardships faced by parents and guardians is approved. However, I urge the students to pay fees in full before exams commence,” Prof Nawangwe noted.
The Vice Chancellor went on to instruct the University Bursar to nullify the charges with immediate effect.
“By copy of this letter, the University Bursar is instructed to waive the surcharge,” he added.
The students’ Guild welcomed this directive with all hands as the body reacted stating;
“This is to confirm that our request to waive the surcharge due to late registration owing to the prevailing economic hardships faced by parents and guardians has been approved. However, students are urged to pay fees in full before exams commence.”
The elimination of the much undesired surcharges is a relief to many students who struggle with tuition payment and related charges.
It is safe to suggest that the Alionzi government has registered an early tick in its term of office that yet to be scrutinized.
