Excitement is in the air as Makerere University wins another challenge, courtesy of Google. The latest information from Google in Africa confirms that Makerere University emerged among the 20 winners of the recently concluded AI Impact Challenge spearheaded by the giant digital company.
According to Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere was the only African university that won this kind of grant and they are set to receive USD 1.3 million for achieving this milestone.
“This morning at the 2019 Google I/O event, Makerere University was announced as one of the 20 winners of @Googleorg’s AI Impact Challenge. It’s more important to note that @MakerereU is the only institution on the Continent that won this grant and will receive USD 1.3 million.” Nawangwe tweeted.
“We’re super excited that @MakerereU is one of the AI Impact Challenge grantees! Congratulations for representing the continent #io19” tweeted Google in Africa.
The Google Impact Challenge asks local nonprofit innovators how they would make their community a better place. The public and a panel of local judges vote for the ideas with the most potential, and Google pairs each winner with a strategic package of support including funding and Google volunteers.
