Forget the Floyd Mayweather v. Manny Pacquio bout, the one that happened in Muk on Saturday during the president’s visit was in a league of its own.
The freedom square was over the weekend turned into a ring of sorts as too-hungry-and-too-broke-to-buy-drinks students flexed muscles for the drinks that were flowing like mana from heaven.
Some of the hungry and yawning “ladies” and “gentlemen” from the ‘Harvard of Africa’ as they prefer to call themselves were seen making a mad dash to the serving point where the drinks were, savagely tearing into the cartons of soda and water and flexing with each other for bottles to quench their thirst.
Not done yet, the students were thrown into another stampede as NRM party shirts were being dished out by the organisers. Security had to intervene to ensure no blood was shed as the students outdid themselves all in an effort to add to their lecture-wear wardrobe.
The lucky ones who managed to salvage drinks and shirts from the melee were seen keeping in their deep pockets a good number of them, perhaps keeping for their colleagues back at hostel and their relatives at home.
Others were, however, unlucky as they walked off with nothing but bruises and crushed hope, promising to go to the gym and return tougher next time.
