A team of ICT students from Makerere University emerged winners of this year’s Huawei ICT Africa competition grand prize in Computer Track and first prize in Network track in an event held in South Africa.

Coming second in position for the network track is Kyambogo University, followed by Gulu and Kabale University in third spot.

In a separate category, Muni University won the first prize in cloud track out of 18 teams of threes from 16 countries.

Speaking after the win, one of the participating students from Makerere University – Stephen Okello applauded Huawei for the platform which gave him exposure to new concepts in the particular technologies in network and computer track.

“This year’s competition was a bit challenging as compared to the previous ones because we got introduced to more advanced concepts in datacom, security and even in wireless technology so we had to really put in much efforts in learning and mastering them within the shortest period of time. Well this prepared us well in solving real life problems because you have to be a quick learner and work as a team to solve these IT Challenges so that you succeed in this ever changing global environment of technology. I really appreciate Huawei for the tremendous job as far as the ICT Competition is concerned and we hope for the best comes this year 2023”, Okello said

The regional stage of this competition comes after seven (7) months of preparation which has initial entry and registration of over 16,000 participants from over 500 institutions.

Uganda had six representing teams (from different universities) out of which four qualified for the global stage of the competition slated to take place in China come May 2023.

Neighboring country Kenya emerged overall prize winner for Network & Cloud joint category track.

With the theme of “Connection, Glory, Future”, the Huawei ICT Competition gathers higher educational institutions, training institutions, and industry enterprises, to promote the cultivation, growth, and employment of ICT young professionals from universities and colleges, helping the ICT talent ecosystem thrive.
