In light of the upcoming guild elections at Makerere University, the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) last evening, decided that they would present Obedgiu Derrick as their candidate for the 2020 guild election.
Obedgiu, a 2nd year student pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Education, won the primaries by 12 votes. His win is attributed to the fact that he is a very good orator and quite popular with the students.
“I extend most sincere thanks to the Executive, Delegates, Elders Council and the entire fraternity of the Uganda Young Democrats upon the resounding endorsement and support given to us yesterday. The Democratic nomination is a clear confirmation of our commitment to the cause of the students and the students Movement not only at Makerere University but in Uganda and the world at large.” Obedgui said in a statement this morning.
“Our campaign believes in access to Education for all without discrimination on financial grounds. Our campaign stands for the defence of the fundamental freedoms of Expression, conscience and in academic freedoms for students and staff alike. We are the only campaign that has expressed commitment to engagement of all stakeholders (Students, administration, staff) as equals to hue out lasting solutions for the challenge of sexual harassment and working together tirelessly to create Makerere University as a safe space for gender relations based on respect, dignity and acceptability.” He added.
Obedgui is a reknown strike master at Makerere University and was suspended from the university for almost a year for opposing the 15% cumulative tuition policy even before the riots broke out last year. He is a close confidant of Stella Nyanzi, the embattled former Makerere University researcher and a poet.
This comes a day after ‘Lumbox’ had their primaries as well and these saw the selection of Judith Nalukwago as the candidate that Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls will support for the same election. Ms Nalukwago was the Vice Guild President of the 85th guild and is desired as an iron lady by those who worked closely with her.
