Information reaching our news desk at this hour confirms, the director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), Prof Mahmood Mamdani has been appointed as the new Kampala International University (KIU) Chancellor.
Prof Mamdani, a leading Ugandan academic, author, and political commentator has today morning been been announced as the (KIU) new Chancellor. He is also a Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at the School Government at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and the Professor of Anthropology.
Prof. Mamdani is a Ugandan (of Indian origin) who has written and made a number of books and publications respectively. He has authored among others, Politics and Class Formation in Uganda(1973) and Academic Freedom in Africa (1994).
The MISR director appeared so frequently in the news in 2016 when he locked former Makerere University researcher, Dr. Stella Nyanzi out of her office justifying the lockout on grounds that the fellow refused to teach in the institute’s doctoral program.
The dispute which saw Dr Nyanzi staging a nude protest at Uganda’s Premier university attracting attention of dozens of international Africanist scholars.
