Makerere University National Unity Platform (NUP) chapter vetted applicants who intend to be delegates ahead of the forthcoming guild elections.
The applicants were vetted on June 21st, 2022 by a nine-member committee composed of 7 executive members and two elders.
Notable of the vetting process were the political sentiments that took center-stage as the committee vetted applicants.
Some applicants were vetted on grounds that they belong to the ‘sisi wenyewe’ political group.
According to most members of the vetting committee, the ‘sisi wenyewe’ political grouping is affiliated to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) thus its subscribers were not fit to be NUP delegates.
However, some members of the vetting committee revealed to this publication that the committee was majorly composed of ‘bakooto’ – another political grouping at Makerere University.
These say the committee didn’t provide valid proof that those vetted belong to an independent grouping.
They further add that applicants subscribing to the bakooto group were given priority in order to vote for the bakooto guild aspirant who they allege to be a one Mwesigwa Calvin Mugambwa.
The list of successful applicants who were selected to be the party’s delegates will be released soon.
According to sources, the NUP Mak chapter will vote for their flag bearer in the 88th guild race on Friday June 24th, 2022.
The guild elections will be held on July 8th, 2022. However, with such political sentiments and divisions in the NUP Mak chapter, it remains subject to debate whether the People power and NUP divisions at Kyambogo University will resurface at Makerere.
