Makerere University held its first physical guild debate in three years on Friday March 7th, 2025 at the Yusuf Lule Teaching Facility Auditorium, restoring hope for the return of physical elections.
Broadcasted on NTV, the debate saw the 13 aspirants vying for the university’s top seat deliberate and answer thought-provoking questions regarding their candidature and future plans for the Guild.
While speaking to NTV, Ssentamu Churchill James, a guild aspirant in the 91st Guild race said physical debates will give chance to students to witness what the different aspirants have to offer so they are able to make the right choice.
Makerere University banned physical elections in 2022 following a campaign scuffle that left one dead. After the incident, the university hadn’t witnessed a physical on-campus guild debate.
Makerere Students will go to the polls on Wednesday next week to elect their 91st Guild leadership. The winner of the Wednesday Guild presidential poll will succeed Lubega Vincent Nsamba.
