A student of Mbarara University of Science Technology (MUST) was found dead in her room on Monday night.
The incident happened in Kitebero cell, Katete ward in Nyamitanga Division, Mbarara Municipality where Villian Asala was found hanging.
According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, the deceased was pursuing a computer related course at the Mbarara-based University.
Kasasira added that police was called by Asala’s neighbours who peeped in her room through the window only to find her hanging on the rope before they made an alarm.
“This student committed suicide on Monday evening at around 7:00pm and we were called at around 8:00pm. We found the body hanging on a new rope and took it for postmortem at Mbarara regional referral hospital,” Kasasira said.
Kasasira added that the deceased’s relatives took the body to her ancestral home in Arua on Tuesday.
According to Kasasira, some unknown people stole her laptop which he believes could have pushed her to commit suicide.
“When she fell sick, her relatives applied for a dead year at MUST and she had resumed in August but we have been told that about two weeks ago some unknown people stole her laptop which we think caused her to commit suicide,” said Kasasira.
The reason why Asala committed suicide remains unclear but Kasasira has however revealed that Asala had a mental problem and she was admitted at the psychiatric ward at Mbarara referral hospital around 2016/2017. She was later taken to Butabika hospital.
“Her friends at MUST saw her with a rope on Sunday in her bag but she told them she was going to use it as hang line for her clothes, and that’s the last time they saw her,” Kasasire added.
