Members of Parliament led by Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze, have launched a campaign to curb excessive consumption of alcohol.
Speaking at the launch this morning, Ms Nambooze said among other things, the law should restrict selling of alcohol within university premises. She said that her campaign is aimed at helping young people live responsible lives.
“We want to make beer hard to get at Universities. No more beers at guild canteens. Bars should operate outside institutions,” Ms Nambooze suggested.
However, the Member of Parliament for Luuka County opposed this move saying that alcohol sometimes helps lecturers to execute their duties well. “Some lecturers at Universities are addicted to alcohol. Let’s allow beer at canteens but let’s limit the quantity to be sold,” he said.
The campaign is facilitated by several civil society organizations led by Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance.
