Gomba West Member of Parliament Robina Gureme Rwakoojo has today officially declared her intentions to contest for the position of Deputy Speaker Parliament of Uganda. In a media launch held at Imperial Royale today morning, Rwakoojo vowed to improve the debating skills of fellow legislators once elected for the mentioned position.
Rwakooko, who has worked in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for a period of over 25 years revealed that there is need for capacity building both within and outside Uganda in a bid to improve on the debating skills of legislators.
“I have sat and debated in Parliament and I find that Parliamentary dabates need to be improved further by equipping members through capacity building , both within and outside Uganda. The constitution names legislation as the chief duty of a Member of Parliament. The induction we have at the start of Parliament is not sufficient to cater for this need and requires to be beefed up to achieve this objective,” Rwakoojo told journalists.
Among other issues, Rwakoojo also hopes to improve on the legislators welfare as well as that of the parliament staff. The aspiring Deputy Speaker explained that she avail legislators with the enough space and equipment to enable them legislate well. she also plans to work with the government to ensure that there is a provision for good health of all MPs in addition to availing them with transportation to their respective constituencies.
The down to earth and trustworthy legislator further vowed to smoothen on the working relationship between the three arms of government.
Speaking of journalists, Rwakoojo also has a plan for media practitioners in mind once elected Deputy Speaker. According to her, she will ensure that there is specialized capacity building for media reporting of Parliamentary debates and activities.
Rwajoojo futher promised to execute her responsibiites with fairness once elected Deputy Speaker.
“I am calm and composed and I will handle the proceedings of the House with tolerance and fairness. I am calling upon the members of the 11th Parliament to consider my qualifications, experience, and integrity and vote me as the best candidate for Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.” she vowed.
