The Makerere University Academic Staff Association resolved that its representatives to the University council should withdraw technically without being forced during a general assembly that happened on Friday evening.
The assembly was a follow up of their controversial August 10th assembly that led to the passing of a vote of no confidence in the council over incompetence. Lecturers claim that the council has led to several procedural mistakes and in some instances causing financial loss to Uganda’s biggest public University.
As they await a reply from the Ministry of Education following the vote of no confidence, MUASA has asked its two representatives called Associate Prof. Ireeta Tumps and Dr. Sarah Ssali who also doubles as the dean of the school of Women and Gender studies to withdraw peacefully and avoid embarassment.
While speaking to the press shortly after the assembly, the MUASA Chairperson Dr. Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu revealed that the said officials are expected to exit the council as there is no reason for participating in something they don’t believe in.
“We hope they will really respect the decision of the General Assembly and get out of the council. Members were very clear today that there is no reason to have representatives to a council they don’t believe in,” said Dr. Kamunyu.
Among other issues MUASA is expecting from the Ministry of Education and Sports include an update from government on its commitment to pay their enhanced salaries amounting to 29.5 billion shillings promised for this financial year.
