Under the umbrella “Role Sumbi Cake Mandazi” Association (RSCMA), local food vendors in Nakawa have revealed that some snack makers are using transformer oil to make Rolex, a delicious fast food enjoyed mostly by Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Students.
The association revealed this during a meeting held at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) offices in Nakawa division where they cried out to Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to investigate allegations that some quick snack makers are using transformer oil.
There are several snack vendors around MUBS’ small gate and other places in Nakawa neighboring the university’s hostels. Rolex has been making campus life easier as students find it convenient to hit the streets during breakfast, lunch and supper hours, to buy a rolex that comes in different styles such a Nyanya mbisi (raw tomatoes) mixed with chapatti and eggs. Some innovative chefs have added avocado to the delicious fast food.
However, with the ever-increasing prices of cooking oil, some vendors have reportedly resorted to using the risky transformer oil while preparing rolex and other snacks.
The meeting was attended by Nakawa mayor Ronald Balimwezo, Abdul Rahman Lukungu, the chairman of the association, UNBS officials as well as food vendors from Nakawa division.
During the meeting, Lukungu submitted that some money minded vendors get oil pilfered from transformers, filter, and then use it to prepare snacks.
Balimwezo, the Nakawa mayor called upon vendors to stop buying cheap, unsealed cooking oil as it risks putting the health of their customers in danger. He further explained that unsealed cooking oil might contain contaminants that can be harmful to human health.
Sarah Nantongo, who was representing UNBS at the meeting, promised the vendors body that they will boost their monitoring of activities in the business by checking various oils in the cooking business.
