A report on Public Debt, Grants, Guarantees and Other Liabilities for financial year 2022/2023 provided by Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MFPED) has it that Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) scooped the biggest share of grants worth UGX 5.962 Billion
Conquering 18 out of the total 40 grants marked by MFPED in that financial year, the projects at MUST include the recent 5 year D43 NIH grant entitled “Digital Mobile Technologies to Study Tuberculosis: A Multi-disciplinary Program”. This was a sprout by Prof Celestino Obua – the MUST Vice Chancellor, and Dr Angella Musiimenta, a celebrated researcher at the same institution.
The D43 NIH grant will see the development of a training program in digital mobile technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to strengthen tuberculosis (TB) and public health research capacity in Uganda.
Research at MUST is in high gear; and it was evident at the recently held 29th graduation on May 27, where a number of academicians were recognized/rewarded for their activity including Dr. Godfrey Zari Rukundo with 112 publications, Dr. Ngonzi Joseph – 96 publications, Dr. Edgar Mulogo and Dr. Joel Bazira were recognized with 88 and 83 publications respectively.
Section 44, Subsection (1), (2) and (3) of the Public Finance Management Act, 2015 provides for the authority to the Ministry of Finance to receive grants on behalf of Government to be implemented by various Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Local Governments.
