The students’ fraternity at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is troubled with the frequent changes made in their marks on their student portals
According to a source at MUST, last week on Friday the University senate sat and approved results for the second semester of 2020/2021 academic year. Immediately, the students’ results were uploaded on the students’ portals, when students checked they found genuine results and some were able to take screenshots.
The source further revealed that the genuine results lasted for only hours on the portal and they were later altered to lower grades. The alteration affected all results that were on the portal.
‘’On Sunday evening, my friend alerted me that there is a change in her CGPA which also forced me to check on my portal only to discover that my CGPA has been lowered from 4.24 to 3.96. I later on realized that grade in four course units were changed to lower grade i.e. where I had B, I was given a C+. Few minutes later, students started raising the same issue,’’ one student cried out.
Campus bee has been informed that the change in marks is attributed to system adjustment of the grading system and it only affected those students with borderline marks.
Initially the system has been using rounding off technique and currently it adopted the truncating system. For example, initially one with 64.95 would get 65 with is a C+ and now with truncating that per will remain with 64 which earns him C.
It is alleged that there are students whose borderline grades were lowered into retakes for example one who had obtained 49.6 with a D, currently that person is having 49 which subjects him to retake.
One of the GRCs who had a conversation with the Academic registrar communicated that the administration requested the service provider of the AIMS system to give a statement which she will give to the students as the official communication.
