On 27th November 2020, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) moved a step forward when it launched the sexual harassment policy at an event that was held at Igongo Cultural Center Mbarara City.
The policy is aimed at promoting social integrity for a healthy, productive and motivated labor force and student population in MUST.
According to Dr. Edith Wakida the team leader of MUST Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee, sexual harassment can present serious problems for both students and employees of any institution if there is no clear policy addressing such issues.
“The MUST sexual harassment policy is aimed at ensuring a healthy work environment and also strengthen the human resource manual and student rules,’’ she explained.
While launching the policy, Professor Mauda Kamatenesi the vice chancellor Bishop Stuart University (BSU) appealed to education institutions to formulate strict policies that address sexual harassment cases.
She cited that at BSU when a student or member of staff is identified as a culprit of sexual harassment that person is either given last warning as the minimum punishment or a dismissed from the institution.
According to reports, sexual harassment in many societies is considered to be under-reported due to stigma associated with discussing issues of sexuality in the public domain and also due to lack of sufficient evidence to submission and resolution of formal complaints.
