During a staff general assembly held at the university yesterday, lecturers of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) resolved to call off their strike so as to give the university admin a chance to address their problems.
The on and off strike was resumed last month as the lecturers accused the university administration of embezzling funds as well as intimidating staff. The staff also demanded that the committee on education should conduct a forensic audit on the University books of accounts, barring the administration from intimidating staff and kick off the search for a new vice-chancellor.
According to Julius Taremwa, the MUST Senior Administration Forum General Secretary, the university will today (Thursday) resume duties. Taremwa adds that they have given the administration one month to address their grievances.
The strike had paralyzed activities at the university which mostly affected students in internship. The staff members and the university Vice Chancellor Professor Celestino Obua have up to now failed to agree as the later keeps insisting that he will not step down as asked by lecturers.
