Students at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) have vowed to strike if, by midweek, there is no clear communication on the standoff between members of staff and embattled vice-chancellor Prof Celestino Obua.
The students who are expected to start end of 2nd semester exams May 13 have come out to declare this after the vice-chancellor has insisted that he wont leave office amid several outcries by both teaching and non-teaching staff for him to leave office immediately under allegations of financial mismanagement..
Business is paralyzed at the university after members of the teaching and non-teaching staff laid down their tools protesting delayed resignation of Prof Obua who is accused of swindling university funds in connivance with some other officials including but not limited to the university secretary.
According to the secretary general of Mbarara University of Science and Technology Academic Staff Association Julius Taremwa, they have raised five recommendations of which one was tasking university council to immediately retire the current VC in public interest to pave way for the search committee to start the process of searching the next Vice-Chancellor with immediate effect.
Prof Obua, whose 5-year contract expires in October this year, maintains that he won’t leave office because he is preparing documents to apply for another term when they advertise his position.
