Former Prime Minister and Presidential candidate in the 2016 elections Rt. Hon. John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has appealed to Makerere University students to embrace creativity in their quest for financial and academic freedom.
Speaking to University Hall (UH) students at their finalists’ dinner that took place at Emerald Hotel on 27th May, Mr. Mbabazi re-echoed the need for education for every Ugandan.
He said there has been democratisation of education in the NRM times which is a good thing and needs to be embraced. He acknowledged that education was a privilege during their time but it is now a must and no one should afford to lose it.
It is important to note that they were about 2,000 at Makerere but now the number is almost 60,000.
“And apart from education, embrace creativity”, he added.
The flambouyant former Premier then reminisced about his days at Makerere University and how they used to eat three course meals unlike today.
Amama during his time was a Guild Representative to the Council (GRC) where he ably and responsibly represented his hall, UH.
“Leadership then, used to alternate between University Hall and Livingstone”, he recalled.
The Senior Counsel (S.C) expressed alot of ease with which he socialised with students which is usually unexpected of people of his social calibre.
He also acknowledged that it was a great experience to be at the dinner since during his days he didn’t have time to do such as he was in the struggle and therefore couldnt socialise alot.
Mr. Mbabazi studied Law from Makerere before he joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) where he played vital roles in ousting the Obote II regime.
He went on to serve as Attorney General, Minister of Defence, Security, Prime Minister and NRM Secretary General before he contested for President in 2016.
