When they said pomp, a number of students in Makerere University actually thought the Law students meant flop. The day that was 30th April (a Month ender at that) seemed a perfect day for sending off every gathering of Finalists in the oldest tertiary Institution of the Country. It is the reason there was dinner for finalists in Nkruliana (Nkrumah and Juliana), Mitchelex (Mitchell and Complex), and UniCourts (University Hall and Garden Courts) to mention but a few and of course the topic of discussion – Makerere Law Society Dinner.
Forget that the dinner was at Serena. Forget that Qwela Band performed at the night. Forget that Former Supreme Court Justice Kanyeihamba and the Lord Mayor were there. The Law Students really lived up to the set standards. From the dressing and organisation to the Guest List, the Law dinner was an event not to miss. The worst thing is that if we were to note down every bigwig in the Nation that attended, we would go so far that another dinner may be organised and pass while we are still listing them down. But the Uganda Law Society President, and the Hon. Sam Otada among several Lawyers and Students graced the function.
Their after-party was at Club Play, a popular joint in the City and that is where the Law Students had to forget Lord Denning and “amicus curie” and for a moment worry about “turn down for what” and every Jamaican riddim’ there is.
The Makerere Law Society President, Mr . Jordan Tumwesigye said a standard had been set by the previous cabinet when they organised their dinner at Sheraton and that this year, it was only right that they aim higher. In his own words, “he said if they were to be brought before the High Court of History, their job was ultimately done.”
Memories were evoked throughout the event as a projector took them down the historical path in a colorful display of pictures. A one Fazirah, had her night spiced when a special moment was accorded to her because it was her birthday.
After all is said and done, every Finalist concurs with me that this was a night to remember.
