The Uganda Police was on Wednesday morning involved in a scuffle with students of Kabale university who had organized a demonstration in protest of the University’s poor administration. The angry students stormed the University premises to protest for what they termed as ‘maladministration’ under the watch and leadership of their Vice Chancellor, Prof Joy Constance Kwesiga.
As they moved from their hostels, the angry students marched with a petition which they had earlier planned to handover to their VC and Guild President. They were at the same time holding placards as they approached the University premises.
The demonstration ended prematurely after being blocked by Police which was under the command of the University’s OC, George William Okello. Among other issues, the wild and angry students accuse the University’s top leaders of suppressing lecturers who side with them as well as censuring their associations.
More issues that led to the demonstration include failure by the University to hold bazaars, and the alleged general poor welfare of students.
“We want your urgent attention and explanation over the stated issues within 14 days and we call upon our Vice chancellor to allow freedom of expression and speech because human rights is a right not a privilege.”part of their petition reads.
A lecturer identified as Dr. Joseph Tindyebwa is suing the Kabale-based university for terminating his contract following his continuous support for students. While commenting on this matter, Judith Atukunda, the University’s spokesperson said that Tindyembwa’s issue is in the courts of law.
Atukunda also addressed the issue of lack of an LC administration at the university, which was among the reasons behind the demonstration. Atukunda revealed that the LC was not abolished by the University administration but rather by the Guild Council.
