As the situation at Makerere University starts to normalize, Campus Bee has learned that the Uganda Police Force IGP Martin Okoth Ochola is in preparations of deploying a total of 2, 000 police officers in a bid to replace the recently removed UPDF officers.
According to the Daily Monitor (today’s edition), student representatives are not intimidated by the move which is set to guard over 1000 lecture rooms housed inside the university campus. The move has come following the Vice-Chancellor’s announcement that activities will continue as usual and those willing to study will be provided with security.
“Security for those carrying on with their duties will be provided. Examinations will commence as planned on 18th November 2019 and there will be no extension to the Semester.” The Vice-Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe announced yesterday.
As the police plan to deploy heavily at the Ivory Tower, the Uganda Human Rights Commission is investigating how security officers (UPDF and Police) tortured students who participated in the recent demonstration against tuition increment.
More details about the deployment will be coming in shortly.
