She may have grown up in the spotlight of one of Uganda’s most recognised families, but on Saturday, Nsasiirwe Keinembabazi Karugire — popularly known as Sasi — stepped into one that was entirely her own.

Sasi held her Kuhingira ceremony over the weekend, formally sealing her engagement to the son of Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma in a culturally rich event attended by family, close friends, and one very notable grandfather — President Yoweri Museveni himself.

The ceremony, steeped in Banyankole and Bakiga tradition, marked the official moment the Karugire family handed Sasi over to her future husband’s side — a milestone that carries deep cultural weight and signals that a wedding is imminent.

What Is a Kuhingira?

For those unfamiliar with the tradition, a Kuhingira is not simply a party. It is a ceremonial “giveaway” — one of the most emotionally significant moments in the Ankole and Kiga marriage journey, typically coming just before the wedding itself.

The event is marked by music, cultural performances, the exchange of symbolic gifts, and formal speeches from both families. It represents the strengthening of clan ties, the blessing of the couple, and the community’s collective witness to a union being formed.

In many ways, it is the cultural equivalent of a final, formal “yes” — and Saturday’s ceremony delivered exactly that.

Two Prominent Families, One Union

The marriage brings together two families that carry significant weight in Uganda’s social and institutional landscape. Sasi is the daughter of Edwin Karugire and Natasha Museveni — making President Museveni her maternal grandfather. Her fiancé is the son of Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, a senior figure in Uganda’s military establishment.

President Museveni’s attendance at the Kuhingira was widely noted, underscoring the personal significance of the occasion beyond its public dimension.

A Moment for the Culture

For Uganda’s young generation — many of them campus students navigating questions of identity, tradition, and modernity — ceremonies like the Kuhingira carry a renewed relevance. Increasingly, young Ugandans are embracing cultural rites not as obligation but as celebration, blending tradition with contemporary style.

Sasi’s Kuhingira appears to have done exactly that — a ceremony described as warm, intimate, and deeply rooted in culture, even as it drew the attention of the entire country.

Congratulations to Sasi and her fiancé on this beautiful milestone. The wedding chapter is next.
